What we collect

When you read the site

We use Google Analytics to see which pages people read. It sets cookies that give your browser a random ID. With that ID, it records the pages you visit and what you do on them (the links you follow, for example), the site that sent you, your approximate location, and your device and browser. It doesn’t receive your name or email address.

Each time you load a page, our hosting provider receives your IP address, your browser and device details, and the address of the page. It uses them to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, and it may set a short-lived security cookie.

When you email us

We receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write. We use them to reply and to keep a record of the conversation.

Who receives it

We share personal information with these service providers so they can do their work for us:

  • Google, which provides our analytics;
  • our website hosting and delivery provider;
  • our email providers;
  • other service providers, including AI tools, that help us operate the publication.

We may also disclose information when the law requires it, or to protect the site and its readers from abuse. We don’t sell personal information, and we don’t share it for targeted advertising.

Tracking across other sites

Apart from Google Analytics and our hosting provider, no company collects information about your activity on our site. Both also serve many other websites, so either may collect information about your activity over time and across different sites. We have turned off Google signals, so Analytics doesn’t link your visits to a Google account. The site doesn’t respond to browser Do Not Track signals.

Your choices

You can stop Google Analytics from measuring your visits by installing Google’s opt-out add-on, or by using a browser or extension that blocks Analytics.

Write to privacy@shrewdplace.com to ask what personal information we hold about you, or to have it corrected or deleted. Questions about this policy go to the same address.

Google API services

The internal tools we use to run Shrewdplace connect through Google’s APIs only to Shrewdplace’s own Google account, never to readers’ accounts. The use of information received from Google Workspace scopes will adhere to the Google User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we’ll post the new version on this page and update the effective date.
